The meaning of Dachigam is Ten Villages, which may be kept in memory of ten villages that were re-located to an other place for creating this park. Srinagar is the nearest airport to this Dachigan National park, therefore no matter from any far distance you are across the world, you can easily visit Srinagar airport and take your shuttle from there to visit this sanctuary.

You can also take railway transportation to visit Jammu and from their take bus or private transportation to visit this sanctuary.

If you want to travel through road transportation, there is still option for it. There are many public and private buses available from Delhi, Leh, Chandigarh, Jammu and Pahalgam to visit this sanctuary directly. There are also taxis available from Srinagar,which you can hire and travel comfortably with your family and friends.

The best time to visit Dachigam national park is October. You can see many trees and floral fresh grown with green spread across the mountains during October. The minimum temperature in winter is 10 degree Celsius while it is 32 degree Celsius in summer.

This national park is open for public/tourist visit from 5.30 am to 6.30 pm throughout the year. Therefore you are flexible to visit this wonderful national park anytime you prefer and any season may it be. This sanctuary was upgraded to the status of national park in 1981. It is also divided into two parts and they are upper region and lower region. The upper region of this sanctuary is known as Upper Dachigam, whereas the lower region is known as Lower Dachigam. The upper region will experience extreme harsh winters and it is also best to visit this region during months from May to August. However, the lower region can be visited anytime during the year, perhaps the best time will be from months between September and December. If you want to visit this national park, then you need to take permit from the Chief Wildlife Warden before you visit this place.

The park ranges have sloping landscape with grasslands filled across. You will also see the rocky outcrops and cliffs on this range. The mountainsides are filled with coniferous forests, surgin meadows, dotted with alpine pastures, scrub vegetation and waterfalls.

The meadows and grasslands stand covered with pleasing flowers throughout the year; therefore you will enjoy an excellent sightseeing on your visit. Moreover, winter season will be welcoming.

The Marsar Lake running through Dachigam wildlife sanctuary will be a perfect place to fish. Some of the wild trees that you can see across this forest region will include apricot, oak, wild cherry, walnut, elm, apple, willow, poplar, wild cherry, birch and pear. You can also find pine, peach and chinar trees in this forest.

Whilst talking about the wildlife, you can find the wild animals like musk deer, Himalayan black bear, Langur, Himalayan Brown Bear, Leopard, Himalayam Marmot and many others. There is also wonderful species of birds found in this sanctuary. You can certainly see and enjoy not less than 150 species of birds here and among which the most popular are Golden Eagle, Griffon Vulture, Black Bulbul, Bearded Vulture, peregrine Falcon, Western Yellow-billed blue magpie, Grey heron and mach more.
